This week we want you to get to know whose in charge of our funds!
Name: Vanessa Omoruna
Program: Honors Specialization in Health Sciences- BHsc
Year: 3rd year
HSSA Role: VP Finance
Fun Fact: I had 4 jobs in the summer and quit 3 of them
Why did you want to be on HSSA?
I always was apart of student government in the past! I was prime minister of my high school and head of the prom committee. I love being apart of an organization whose main focus is to enhance the student experience. So it was a no brainer for me to want to be apart of HSSA.
What did you do this summer?
I worked out a lot to train for terry fox! I also went on a very vigorous job search for over 3 weeks but hated every job I ended up getting. I did get hired at Paramount Fine Foods which is a middle eastern restaurant and I loved being a server there. I was able to interact with people and bring them happiness, which was awesome! I also had an internship at an optometry clinic that I really enjoyed. I was able to see the more clinical side of health care.
What kinds of extracurricular activities are you involved with?
I am a soph, which is basically a defining part of me. I love sophing a lot! Its such an amazing way to have a direct impact on the incoming first year students. I always want my first year students to be able to come to me if they are having any sort of troubles from passing their first bio midterm or breaking up with their significant others. I also love the people I soph with because they are just as passionate as I am about Western and creating a safe environment on campus for the FYS’.
What or whom inspires you?
My parents inspire me. They always make sure that my siblings and I have everything we need. My mom is the most caring person that I know. She always tells me she loves me every night before I go to sleep. I aspire to be as hard-working and loving to my own children someday.
What is your fav HS course or prof and why?
Fav HS course would definitely have to be Health promotion with Dr. Irwin. I’m sure everyone has heard about how she is just an amazing proof. She really made me think critically about health care and about how to help people improve their health.
What are your future career plans? Where do you see yourself in five/ten/twenty years?
I don’t really have any set future plans, which is the cause of my anxiety. I hope to be working in the health care administration field. In five years I hope I see myself no longer addicted to Netflix and more productive.
How do you define health? What do you do in your everyday life to stay healthy?
I define health as feeling as though you are physically, mentally and emotionally able to carry out your activities of daily life. I like to remember to keep my mental health intake by not draining myself out with schoolwork or council work. I like to play my guitar and do relaxing things like burn a scented candle to calm myself after a stressful day.
Do you have any advice for other Health Students?
Don’t get locked in on one career plan! Keep your options open because you may realize you like something more than you ever thought you would!
Anything else you want to end with?
If you haven’t started watching scandal you are missing out! #itshandled
