STUDENT OPPORTUNITY FUND

The GHIC conference was a wonderful experience, filled with opportunity and intrigue. The
overall environment surrounding the conference was a community of likeminded individuals
coming together to seek improvement for society as a whole. One particular presentation that has
stuck with me was given by Sam DaleyHarris, titled "Do You Want to Make a Profound
Difference on Ending Poverty and Preventable Child Deaths by 2030? Reclaiming Our Democracy
Matters More than You Think!”. He motivated those in attendance to realize that everyone holds the
potential to be an advocate for those in need, and anyone can be a leader, make a change, and
inspire a movement. I was also completely caught off guard by one speaker who mentioned the
sheer amount of waste that is seen in notforprofit organizations. Adjusting for inflation over 6
trillion dollars has been invested improving the health status of developing nations. Many regions
where significant portions of funds have been invested are still in shambles, and many are going
without the basic needs to survive. This speaker addressed the need for proper evaluation and
implementation processes (similarly to what can be learned from Jennifer Irwin’s Health Promotion
classes); instead of blinding throwing money at problems and hoping that they will resolve
themselves. The trip to the Global Health and Innovation Conference with more than 40 of my
fellow Health Studies colleagues was a very meaningful experience, and a welcomed conclusion to
my four years at Western University. My Health Sciences background allowed me to evaluate the
discussions and keynote addresses in a constructive way, while critically thinking about what the
next segment of my career will entail. Specifically, I have always seen myself as very career
oriented; however, this conference has manipulated how I would define success. Many of the
speakers at the conference were part of nonprofit organizations that put aside the lust for wealth,
for the goal of bettering society. A view that is critically important if we wish to drastically improve
