The Global Health Innovation Conference had sessions that discussed multiple topics concerning different areas of the health sector. I decided to go to sessions on different topics of interest to me so I would gain a more broad knowledge on global health issues rather than going to sessions concerning the same or very similar ideas. So there were many opportunities for my goal when going to this conference which was to change my perspective on global health issues, for example there was a session where the speaker not only spoke about the gratifications of volunteer service abroad but also the hazards of it as well. It was a compelling presentation as it’s a topic that is often overlooked and not discussed. It was also an engaging presentation as other health care workers gave their opinions on this topic as well. Another session that is particularly distinct from others was about using the media to educate people concerning various health problems. For example, new Muppet characters specific for a certain country were created from the show Sesame Street to promote healthy behaviours. The goal was that if kids were educated on healthy behaviour they are more likely to continue to adhere to these behaviours in their adulthood. Another speaker discussed how video games were being used to bring awareness on the causes and risks of HIV.
Overall, it has enhanced my experience as a Health Studies student by serving as an encouragement to pursue my interests. The conference had various speakers with different innovations as a result of pursuing their own interest. They were dedicated and some met obstacles or were warned about future problems. This occurred when speakers presented in front of expert panelists who suggested possible organizations for funding and the changes that needed to be made in their plans for it to be able to succeed. I remember one expert panelist firmly told a speaker that her idea would not work if she decided to do it in another country, it would only work in America. I was shocked that he voiced his opinion so openly but it caused me to become aware of what this conference aim was which to share and spread different ideas. I was also able to network with people working with various organizations and creating a positive change in their community. Even as I glance back at the schedule they gave out there were many other interesting subjects discussed but unfortunately not enough time to attend them all. Finally, this was an amazing opportunity and I would definitely go again if given the chance to do so.
