..."create a sustainable healthcare systen but only if value becomes the core issue"
December 7, 2014
The Health Achieve conference was a great experience to learn about many great innovations that are happening in Ontario and across Canada to create a more sustainable healthcare system that provides greater value to its users.
One speaker I thoroughly enjoyed was Harvard business professor, Michael E. Porter. His keynote on how to create effective health care policy by improving value for patients was extremely informative. Through this speech, I learned that we can indeed create a sustainable healthcare system, but only if value becomes the core issue. This can be done in 6 steps:
1. Re-organization delivery around the patients need
2. Measure value in a way that will provide clear measures of success
3. Pay for care differently (fee-for-service does not increase value)
Another favourite speech was given by Olympic gold medal curling skip, Jennifer Jones. Jennifer talked to us about performing under pressure, along with the importance of creating a strong team dynamic. It was very intriguing to see how this can be translated to healthcare teams where health professionals must rely on each other. It was also great to learn about her Olympic journey and the challenges and pressure she faced going into Sochi.
